Workaround: It worked after changing the following in C:\Users\YourProfile\Documents\Assetto Corsa Competizione\Config\controls.json. Find the "Controller (Xbox One For Windows)" string and the line "isGamePad". I changed the value from 0 to 1 and started ACC in VR mode again. The Xbox controller worked now! Hope this helps.

Have tried having the wheel connected before starting game, after starting game, restarting game, changing usb ports, restarting GHUB, and even reinstalling the game.
It is playable and fast guys (aliens) can be fast (close to world record) with controller in like 1 or 2 weeks (because they know how to be fast, they just need to adapt to the controller and to the lack of FFB, or they got better at driving from always using controller anyway).
Firstly, you can get a wheel that supports both PC and one of either Playstation or Xbox. This is most wheels including the G29 (Xbox) and G920 (Playstation) and Thrustmaster TMX (xbox) or T150 (playstation). If you have/use a console take this into consideration.
Oh and most of the HUD elements give you an actual advantage. Those are definitely not gimmicks. Boost gauge for brake boosting for that perfect start. Fuel info so you don't have to ask Crew Chief. Tyre info so you don't have to rely on the native hud which is still not updated to 1.9. Automatic steering lock is obviously also insanely pratical.

It's more fun that forza on a controller because ACC gives you full freedom in control. Only thing is, you'll have some trouble driving in a straight line here with a controller. So you are always slightly going left and right, which causes problems for other players trying to overtake you on narrow parts of the track.
