One thing which is good to know is that the files created by OziExplorer only contain one type of data. ie. a WPT file ONLY contains waypoints, and a PLT file ONLY contains track data, whereas with GPX files, a single GPX file can contain a mix of different data types. ie. a file called CapeYork-Trip.GPX might contain 50 waypoints and 4 track

After checking the gpx file output by Sunnto App, it's figured out that Suunto uses the tag to classify (WayPoints), while most other applications use the (Symbol) tag. Normally, apps give default attributes to data that lacks uncritical properties, but Suunto has apparently chosen to just discard them.

As a result, it may be necessary to convert the Garmin waypoints into the correct coordinate system. Assuming that the Garmin waypoints are in the correct format and coordinate system, they can be used with Humminbird depth finders. Garmin waypoints can be used to mark the location of fish, underwater structures, or other objects of interest.

Excel to Garmin gpx file? Hello. I am tasked with building a route in excel and sending waypoints to a Garmin GPS device. I already have functions built to convert an address to latitude and longitude. What I need help with is doing some kind of conversion to a .gpx file format or a format that native Garmin will accept as an upload for waypoints.

Your Humminbird stores waypoints, routes, and tracks in the industry-standard Lingua Franca .gpx format, which can be read by a Garmin. However, when you export your Humminbird data onto an SD card, it puts the information into a folder called "Matrix" and changes the filename suffix. Standard GPX files can contain waypoints (it's a normal thing to do). But waypoints are not "course points". "Course points" are kind-of like waypoints but associated with the track. "Course points" are a Garmin thing. It's possible that Suunto but not likely. I suspect you are getting waypoints on the Suuto. That wouldn't be surprising at all.
1. I was able to upload tracks to my old Garmin GPSMap64s and a Fenix 7x watch using QGIS 3.28. I couldn't do it by converting a layer to a GPX file. The way I did it was to save features of a vector polygon layer as a kml feature with geometry set to points. Then, I opened Garmin Basecamp and imported the kml file into Basecamp (the option to
Thanks for the reply. Examining the file in Notepad shows that the kml paths are converted to GPX polylines and not tracks. I don't know how to force the conversion to tracks. I've also been playing around with the demo version of ExpertGPS which does convert kmz and kml files into GPX and they display correctly on that PC app.

My handheld Colorado uses .gpx but I'm not sure about my 3010 its an older unit and I don't have direct access to the files on the proprietary garmin card. If your Garmin unit uses SD then you should be able to access the card from your computer and see what format your waypoints and tracks are in. Good luck.
When used for tracks or routes, a .gpx file contains an ordered sequence of points. Technically, there is a difference in the representation of a track vs. a route - but it's mostly a technicality. The important thing is the sequence of points, which are recorded the same way in both cases. A .gpx file may also contain waypoints.
